Hot Sun Foundation and award-winning director Nathan Collett are working with youth groups to produce the world's first feature film made with residents living in Kibera, Kenya, Africa's largest slum. KIBERA KID tells a story of hope and forgiveness in a visually stunning urban landscape that will capture the interest of audiences of all ages throughout the world.
Kibera looks like a giant, sprawling refugee camp stuck right in the heart of the modern city of Nairobi, Kenya. The living conditions in Kibera are appalling- no sanitation, no running water, no electricity, no sidewalks or roads, no security, garbage and trash piled up everywhere…over a million people, living on less than $1 per day, jammed together in dark, crowded, inadequate shacks. However, people living within Kibera have not been crushed by this reality and they have joined together with director Nathan Collett, [a graduate of Stanford University and the University of Southern California (MFA, Cinema-Television) and a Fulbright fellow] to tell stories of their lives.
In 2006 they created a KIBERA KID pilot film which was awarded the student Emmy 2007 for best children's program. In addition it has screened at more than 35 international film festivals and won six more international awards. They are now preparing to produce a feature film.
